Can I rent a property if I have a pet?

Pets are an important part of many tenants' lives, but disclosure to landlords or their agents is an absolute must.

In Queensland, landlords do not have to accept tenants with pets.  However, there are many landlords that make their properties pet-friendly and understand that pets are an important part of many tenants' lives,

As long as the rental property has suitable provision to accommodate pets, and you have approval by the landlord or managing agent prior, a tenant can have a pet in a rental property.   You must disclose any pets on your application when applying for any rental property and at any time you are considering getting a pet.

Failing to advise your landlord or managing agent may see you in breach of your tenancy agreement and there could be further implications as a result of your non disclosure.  It’s best to be up-front so you get the full enjoyment of your new rental home.

A final piece of advice is to get pet approval in writing from your landlord or agent.
